OSPREY CAMPAIGN 93: VERDUN 1916 'THEY SHALL NOT PASS'
by William Martin and Illustrator Howard Gerrard

On 21 February, 1916 German General Erich von Falkenhayn unleashed his hammer-blow offensive against the French fortress city of Verdun. His aim was nothing short of the destruction of the French army. Falkenhayn was sure that the symbolic value of Verdun was such that the French would be ‘compelled to throw in every man they have.’ He was equally sure that ‘if they do so the forces of France will bleed to death’. The massed batteries of German guns would smash the French troops in their trenches and bunkers. But the French hung on with immense courage and determination and the battle became a bloody war of attrition.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 150: KHE SANH 1967-68
by Gordon L. Rottman

Khe Sanh was a small village in northwest South Vietnam that sat astride key North Vietnamese infiltration routes. In September 1966 a Marine battalion deployed into the area. Action gradually increased as the NVA attempted to destroy U.S. Forces bases, and the siege of Khe Sanh proper began in October 1967. The bitter fight lasted into July 1968 when, with the changing strategic and tactical situation, the base was finally closed. This book details the siege and explains how, although the NVA successfully overran a Special Forces camp nearby, it was unable to drive U.S. forces from Khe Sanh. Illustrated by Peter Dennis and H. Gerrard.

OSPREY ELITE 231: SOVIET AIRBORNE FORCES 1930-91
by David Campbell and Illustrator Johnny Shumate

Established in 1932, the Vozdushno-desantnye voyska (‘air-landing forces', or VDV) of the Red Army led the way in airborne doctrine and practice. They conducted major drops during World War II, including at the Dnepr River in September 1943. After the war ended, the VDV became independent of the Air Force and were elevated to the role of strategic asset. The newly rebuilt divisions were organized and trained to conduct deep insertions behind enemy lines, attacking command-and-control facilities, lines of communication, and key infrastructure targets such as nuclear power plants. This training came into play in numerous Cold War confrontations, including Soviet operations in Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968). During the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-89), the VDV proved to be the most formidable of the Mujahideen's opponents, with the development of the air assault concept - the transport, insertion and support of air-landed troops by helicopter rather than parachute.

OSPREY ELITE 206: SPETSNAZ - RUSSIA'S SPECIAL FORCES
by Mark Galeotti

When the shadowy, notorious Spetsnaz were first formed, they drew on a long Soviet tradition of elite commando forces. Throughout the 1960s and '70s they were instrumental in projecting Soviet power in the Third World and in suppressing resistance within the Warsaw pact. The author debunks several myths but uncovers truths that are often even more remarkable. Now, since the chaotic dissolution of the USSR and the two Chechen Wars, Russian forces have seen increasing modernization, involving them ever more in power-projection, counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism. This book is packed with details such as orders-of-battle, equipment and operational doctrine.

OSPREY ELITE 228: ARMIES OF RUSSIA'S WAR IN UKRAINE
by Mark Galeotti and llustrator Adam Hook

In February 2014, street protests in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities led to the ousting of the Russian-backed President Yanukovych. The so-called Euromaidan Revolution saw many changes to Ukraine's constitution, but the violent reaction in the east and south of the country led to armed counter-revolution, unofficially backed by Russia. This conflict is an essential example of Russia's new policy of 'hybrid warfare', which blends propaganda, misinformation, and the deployment of 'deniable' Special Forces and regular troops alongside proxies and mercenaries. Using a mass of official and unofficial sources, this book is an intriguing primer on the forces involved in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, supported by specially commissioned artwork.

OSPREY ELITE 194: THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY SINCE 1949
by Benjamin Lai and Illustrator Adam Hook

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army is the largest in the world, and China is predicted to be on the brink of overtaking the USA as the world’s largest economy. The PLA has progressed steadily since its creation in 1949, from a mass army using ‘human wave’ tactics, into a highly sophisticated force with wide capabilities. The most recent reforms since 1989 have been made possible by massive economic liberalization, and have seen not only the modernization of the armed forces, but the beginnings of global outreach, including Chinese participation in UN peace-keeping missions to Africa, the Middle East, and Haiti.
