OSPREY CAMPAIGN 264: FALL GELB (1). PANZER BREAKTHROUGH IN THE WEST
by Douglas C. Dildy and Illustrator Peter Dennis

Never in the history of warfare has the clash between such great and apparently equal forces been decided so swiftly and conclusively as the German conquest of France and the Low Countries in May and June of 1940. Avoiding the extensive fortifications of France's Maginot Line, Hitler's Wehrmacht planned to advance its 136 divisions through Belgium and northern France in order to destroy the Allied forces there and gain territory from which to prosecute combat operations against France and England. Beginning on 10 May 1940, this book follows the fortunes of Heeresgruppe A as its three Panzer Korps moved stealthily through the dark, hilly, and thickly forested Ardennes in Belgium, before forcing a passage across the river Meuse and racing through France to the Channel.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 272: KURSK 1943 THE NORTHERN FRONT
by Robert Forczyk and Ilustrator Steve Noon

In the summer of 1943, recoiling from defeat at Stalingrad, Hitler conducted a limited objective offensive to eliminate the Soviet Kursk salient. He hoped that the resulting heavy losses inflicted on the Red Army would give the Wehrmacht time to recover its strength, however, the Soviet anticipation of the attack led to extensive losses on both sides as Soviet anti-tank mines and fierce fighting pushed the Germans back, liberating the German-held Orel in the process. Exploring both the German offensive and the Soviet counteroffensive, this volume uses documents from both sides, extensive photographs, maps and bird’s-eye-views to shed new light on the battle.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 281: THE CAUCASUS 1942-43. KLEIST'S RACE FOR OIL
by Robert Forczyk and Illustrator Steve Noon

This volume tells the story of Operation Fall Blau. Learning from their experiences during Operation Barbarossa a year before, Wehrmacht commanders knew that Nazi Germany's lack of oil was a huge strategic problem. Seizure of the Caucasus oilfields, which were responsible for 82% of the Soviet Union's crude oil, would alleviate the German army's oil shortages whilst denying vital fuel to the Red Army. Whilst Army Group B advanced along the Volga towards Stalingrad, Army Group A, spearheaded by Ewald von Kleist's elite Panzerarmee 1, was to advance into the Caucasus to seize the oilfields of Maikop, Grozny and Baku. Featuring full-colour artwork, archival photos and detailed analysis, this book follows the vicious, intense fighting that characterised one of the most important campaigns of World War II.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 129: OPERATION BARBAROSSA 1941 (1) ARMY GROUP SOUTH
by Robert Kirchubel and Ilustrator Howard Gerrard

Operation Barbarossa, Germany’s surprise assault on the Soviet Union in June 1941, aimed at nothing less than the complete destruction of Communist Russia. This book focuses on Field Marshal von Rundstedt and Army Group South, tasked with the capture of the Ukraine and Crimea. Von Rundstedt’s 46 divisions and single Panzer Group faced fierce resistance from the best equipped, trained and commanded units in the Red Army, but ultimately succeeded in destroying the Soviet 6th and 12th Armies at Uman before inflicting a further 600,000 casualties at Kiev.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 171: RIVER PLATE 1939 THE SINKING OF THE GRAF SPEE
by Angus Konstam and Illustrator Tony Bryan

Days before the outbreak of World War II, German raiders put out to sea to prey on Allied merchantmen. Amongst them was the Panzerschiff ('armoured ship') Graf Spee, a formidable warship with the firepower of a battleship but the size, speed and range of a cruiser. Under the command of Captain Hans Langsdorff, she hunted across the South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, eventually arriving at the River Plate in search of an Allied convoy. Instead she found three Royal Navy cruisers under the command of Commodore Henry Harwood, eager to put an end to the 'pocket battleship'. Featuring full colour artwork and archive photographs, this comprehensive volume explores the thrilling story behind the Battle of the River Plate, an engagement that unquestionably demonstrated the effectiveness of British seapower.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 58: FIRST YPRES 1914: THE GRAVEYARD OF THE OLD CONTEMPTIBLES
by David Lomas and (Illustrator) Ed Dovey

In the autumn of 1914 the British Expeditionary Force faced a heavily reinforced German drive. Field Marshal Sir John French, the British Commander-in-Chief, had sent his men north into Flanders, so they could fight across open ground - this was not to be the case. What occured was the first of the trench-warfare battles, where lines that would remain almost static for the rest of the war were established. Although the Germans failed to reach the channel ports, the death knell had rung for the BEF, which was virtually wiped out in this brave defence.

OSPREY CAMPAIGN 355: MALPLAQUET 1709
by Simon MacDowall and Illustrator Graham Turner

In 1709, after eight years of war, France was on her knees. There was not enough money left in the treasury to pay, equip or feed the army and a bad harvest led to starvation throughout the kingdom. Circumstances had worsened to the point that King Louis XIV was forced to offer to end the War of Spanish Succession on humiliating terms for his country. However, the allied powers - Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire - refused Louis' offer, believing that one more successful campaign would utterly destroy French power. This book examines the campaign of 1709, culminating in the battle of Malplaquet, which would prove Louis' enemies disastrously wrong. Led by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, the allied armies achieved a tactical victory - but it was a hollow one.
