ISRAELI SHERMANS

by Tom Gannon

This is a much expanded and updated edition of the author’s original Israeli Sherman, published in 2001 and long out-of-print. Following a general description of the basic M4 series, the humble beginning of the very first Sherman in service in 1948 is covered in detail. Hundreds of black-and-white photographs trace the evolution of Israel’s Shermans from cobbled-together veterans of the Second World War into some of the most lethal variants of the series ever conceived. There is also coverage of specialised vehicles, such as ARVs, dozers and mine clearing vehicles. The various types used in the War of Independence, the 1956 Sinai Campaign, the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War are all covered in depth. There are also a few never-before-published photographs of the unique APC developed by Lebanese engineers and used by the South Lebanon Army. Model builders will appreciate the detailed close-up colour images of Israeli Shermans

OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS 495: THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936-39 (1)

by Alejandro de Quesada. Illustrated by Stephen Walsh

The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39, was the curtain-raiser to World War II. It was the first great clash of 20th-century ideologies, between the rebel Nationalist army led by General Franco (aided by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy), and the Republican army of the government (aided by the Communist Soviet Union and volunteers from liberal democracies). The Nationalists secured victory and installed a right wing dictatorship. Featuring specially commissioned full-color artwork, this study depicts the fighting men of the Nationalist forces.

OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS 498: THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR 1936-39 (2)

by Alejandro de Quesada. Illustrated by Stephen Walsh

The Spanish Civil War involved a complex collection of forces, particularly on the Republican side. This title illustrates how diverse the Republican forces were, drawn from loyal elements of the Spanish army that rejected the appeal of the rebel generals, a wide range of volunteer regional units and political militias, and supported by volunteers from many other countries, including Great Britain, France and Germany, in units known as the International Brigades. Featuring full-colour artwork, this second of a two-part study depicts the fighting men of the Republican forces and their foreign comrades.

WARPAINT NO. 53: AVRO ANSON

by Alan W. Hall

Although the Anson was a front-line aircraft early in the war, flying coastal reconaissence and anti-submarine operations, plus support over Dunkirk, it was soon obsolescent. Slow, short-legged, and woefully underarmed, it was soon replaced by the Lockheed Hudson and other aircraft. However, the performance and configuration of the aircraft made it ideal for flight, navigation, gunnery, and wireless training, communications, air-sea rescue, and utility roles. The Anson went through many marks, with over 10,000 aircraft produced in a production span of 18 years and service life of over 32 years.
