THE EMPEROR'S LAST VICTORY
by Gunther Rothenberg

Signs of use. Previous owner name on endpaper. Marks and highlighting in Notes and Suggestions. Plastic cover on d/w. In July 1809 Napoleon crossed the Danube with 187,000 men to confront the Austrian Archduke Charles and his 145,000 strong army at Wagram on the plains east of Vienna. The Austrians fought with great determination, but eventually the Emperor won a narrow victory, the day being carried by superior French firepower. Wagram compelled Austria to make peace and heralded a new order of warfare, anticipating the massed manpower and weight of fire deployed later in the battles of the American Civil War and at Verdun and on the Somme. Appendices include Orders of Battle for the actions at Aspern - Essling, and Wagram itself
