EXORCISING HITLER
by Frederick Taylor

The Occupation and Denazification of Germany. Germany had entered the twentieth century prosperous and strong. During the 1930s, embittered by a lost war and scarred by mass unemployment, Germany embraced the dark cult of National Socialism. Within less than a generation, its great cities lay in ruins and its shattered industries and its cultural heritage seemed beyond salvation. This is the story of Germany’s year zero, telling of the final Allied campaign, the hunting down of the Nazi resistance, the vast displacement of peoples, the competition between Soviet Russia and the West and the hunger and near starvation of a once proud people.

THE LAST DAYS OF HITLER
by Hugh Trevor-Roper

Mass market paperback. pages browing. Good.Since Nazi officials had burned Adolf Hitler's body and disposed of the remains at an unknown site just before the Russians took Berlin, it was important to gain other evidence of Hitler's demise as there were widespread fears (and some hopes) that he had survived. Trevor-Roper clearly describes how Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, came to commit suicide on April 30, 1945, in a private room of his fortified underground bunker in Berlin. He also shows how Hitler's last days were the culmination of growing dissolution of the Nazi regime in the last years of the war.

THE NUREMBERG TRIAL
by Ann & John Tusa

An account of the trial of the major German war criminals by the Allies at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. A revealing study that illustrates the tensions and problems of setting up and conducting the trials. The authors examine all aspects of the trials including the treatment of the accused, the impact of the guilty verdict on Hermann Göring and his plea to be executed by firing squad (rather than be hanged as a common criminal), and the alleged incompetence of the leading American prosecutor, Robert H. Jackson.

THE BERLIN DIARIES 1940-1945
by Marie 'Missie' Vassiltchikov

A remarkable account of life in a police state at war. Marie Vassiltchikov worked with the German Broadcasting Authority and later with the Information Department of the Foreign Ministry where her immediate superior was the odious Dr Franz Six, the Nazi official who was appointed by Reinhard Heydrich to direct state police operations in German-occupied Great Britain. She describes vividly life in Berlin and Germany during the war. A friend of Adam von Trott she knew about events leading up to the July 1944 plot and its aftermath.
