ENEMY COAST AHEAD

He led many raids over the Third Reich but is best remembered for commanding the successful 'Dam Busters' raid on the night of May 16/17, 1943. Using Barnes-Wallis' revolutionary 'Bouncing Bomb', 17 Lancaster Bombers from RAF Scampton attacked the Mohne, Eder & Sorpe Dams & wreaked huge destruction on German industry in the Ruhr Valley. Gibson was killed in action on September 19, 1944, on a mission over Rheydt. He was acting as Master Bomber - the most dangerous task in the bomber stream.
