CONFEDERATE RAIDER
by John M Taylor

An account of Admiral Raphael Semmes of the CSS Alabama - a hero of the US Civil War. Considered by his Northern contemporaries as nothing but a Union-hating pirate. During a dramatic 2 year cruise the CSS Alabama put nearly 100 Federal merchant vessels out of action. Her final epic battle, off the coast of France against the USS Kearsage, was the last clash between two wooden ships. Semmes was an unyielding and brilliant commander whose crew held no allegiance to the Confederacy.

By the twentieth century the city had acquired a Naval base and was the centre of a metropolitan area of over 1 million inhabitants.

BUSINESS IN GREAT WATERS: THE U-BOAT WARS 1916-1945
by John Terraine

Signed by the author. Dustjacket torn on spine An outstanding history of the German U-Boat campaigns in two World Wars. It examines the impact of the threat in WWI and the implementation of the Convoy system and, in World War II, the devastating German tactics, the role of Intelligence and the impact of technology. It provides both the Allied and German points of view on various subjects, from technical development to their differing priorities in the Battle of the Atlantic. Terraine looks at German tactical use of submarines for surface attack, considering the vessels to be torpedo boats, capable of submerging when necessary.

TRAFALGAR
by John Terraine

This superb account describes one of the most famous naval battles of all time, which shattered Napoleon's dreams of invading England. It is not just the story of the day in which Nelson and Collingwood smashed the combined fleets of France and Spain, but also that of a complex campaign of which Trafalgar was the climax, arguing that the protagonists were not Admirals Villeneuve and Nelson, but Napoleon and the British naval tradition.
