The author met this Soviet Agent when he was serving in the WWII German Embassy in Japan. In 1946 he was interned in an Allied camp for diplomats and met several former German journalists and colleagues from the Tokyo Embassy. Sorge was one of the most successful spies of all time, welding together a network of agents around his Japanese colleague Ozaki.

His agents were some of the most important of WWII, they told of the German plan to takeover Czechoslovakia, the development of the Luftwaffe, the plans to attack Belgium, Netherlands & France in 1940 etc. He planned the assassination of Heydrich. He escaped to the West after the Russian takeover of his country.
