The battle of Trafalgar which took place on 21 October 1805 was the most decisive naval victory of the Napoleonic wars. Twenty-seven British ships of the line led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory defeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships of the line under French Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve off the south-west coast of Spain, just west of Cape Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost twenty-two ships, without a single British vessel being lost.

Jack McCleery, born in Belfast in 1898, joined the RNAS in 1916 as a Probationary Flight Officer. During the next ten months he completed his training, gaining his wings as a Sub-Lieutenant. In July 1917 he was posted to the new aircraft carrier HMS Furious, which would be based at Scapa Flow and Rosyth. He served in this ship until February 1919, flying Short 184 seaplanes and then Sopwith 1½ Strutters, also flying other types from various shore stations. He witnessed the world’s first carrier strike mission, the 1918 Tondern raid, and took part in more than a dozen sweeps into the North Sea and reconnaissance missions off the coast of Denmark.
