Field Marshal FitzRoy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan, was on Wellington's personal staff in the Peninsular. He was badly wounded at Waterloo resulting in the amputation of his right arm. Despite this he became the British commander in the Crimea where he died as a result of dysentery. He is usually portrayed as an incompetent commander but the author sees him as an able tactician concerned for the welfare of his soldiers.

The author was an RAF air crew member serving in 608 and 217 Squadrons. He was captured in 1942 and after incarceration and attempted escapes from 7 camps he was eventually liberated in May 1945. An autobiographical account from 1900 to 1919. The author was a British travel writer and journalist. During the First World War he was an official correspondent for the British Army in France. He returned in 1917 to work on 'The Nation', a publication opposed to the war. Born in the East End of London, his first job was as a Shipping Clerk. He then he became a journalist for the Morning Leader, for whom one of his assignments involved travelling up the Amazon.

The story of the only woman to fight for the French Legion, born to a life of privilege, and after being expelled from finishing school, she joined the Free French in 1940. She sailed to Africa where she travelled the country eventually becoming a driver to General Koenig of the Foreign Legion. He was to become her lover and he also changed the face of Rommel's North African campaign. At the great siege of Bir Hakeim , the general's troops were surrounded for fifteen days by Rommel's Panzer division. Refusing to leave the General's side she eventually, at the wheel of his car, led the convoy of vehicles and men across the minefields in a daring mass breakout. In 1997 in a simple ceremony the Legion presented her, now a frail 88 year old, with the Legion d'Honneur--their highest award for bravery.
